American jazz diva, singer, songwriter and Broadway actress Shayna Steele united with a local artistic Latvian Radio Big Band to give her first concert in Liepaja!
Already with the release of her first solo album I’ll be Anything, Shayna Steele became a recognised solo artist. LA clubs fought for her performances, while San Francisco, New York, Milan, Rome and Zurich welcomed her with overcrowded concert halls and a loyal fan base. Ten years after her first solo album, the owner of this strong vocal is called the American jazz diva, one of the brightest singing sensations of our time. A charismatic, charming and truly unique voice with the power of a volcanic eruption, outstanding vocal technique and composing skills. Collaborating with the pop star Rihanna and American electronic music legend Moby, she recorded another bright solo album Rise. The singer's vocal has been featured in the most popular US TV shows, movies, such as "Sex and the City 2", the HBO series "The Sopranos", and the Grammy Award Ceremony.
Shayna is currently finishing up her 4th album and continues to play solo concerts throughout the world with her quartet, symphony orchestras (Rochester Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Dallas Symphony) and Jazz Big Band Orchestras. At the concert in Liepaja, she will continue collaboration with the professional and artistic Latvian Radio Big Band that started in 2017. The programme includes Steele's original pieces, as well as popular jazz, blues and soul melodies.
The Latvian Radio Big band was founded in 1966 as the Latvian SSR television and radio music-hall orchestra. After the reestablishment of the Latvian Independence, the Latvian Radio Big band – the only professional jazz orchestra in Latvia – was shut down in 1996. After a 16-year break, with new ideas and fully energized, the Latvian Radio Big band was reborn. The renaissance of the jazz orchestra was lead by such Latvian jazz musicians as Māris Briežkalns, Kārlis Vanags, and Raimonds Pauls. The first performance of the newly re-established orchestra was with one of the leading jazz vocalists in the world Kurt Elling and the Italian jazz diva Roberta Gambarini. Since then, the big band has performed with such musical stars as James Morrison, Seamus Blake, Randy Brecker, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Marius Neset, Jojo Mayer, Richard Bona, Michael Pipoquinha, Ruthie Foster, Diane Schuur and many others. As a part of the Latvian centenary celebrations, the Latvian Radio Big Band was welcomed with sold-out venues standing ovations in two prestigious American concert halls - in the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. and in the Lincoln Center in New York, also joining Randy Brecker in the Jazz Baltica festival in Germany. Each of the Big Band performances is like an energy exchange between the musicians and the audience. Today the collective is an integral part of the Latvian culture scene and they are preparing new and interesting projects under the leadership of Kārlis Vanags.
