On Imants Kalniņš’ 79th birthday, May 26, the treasured composer will be celebrated by the first live performance of the concert program "Kamēr vēl gliemeži skrien" (While the Snails Are Still Running). In it, director Māra Ķimele and musicians Daumants Kalniņš and Kaspars Zemītis have created a story reaching back to the early works of the composer, performing both less known and well-beloved songs by Imants Kalniņš. They shift from playful to contemplative, turn from joyous to intimate. The songs resonate, burst, rumble and murmur like summer, fragrant in the air.
Composer and conductor Juris Vaivods has assisted in selecting pieces for the program. The concert performance has been created together with director Māra Ķimene, and it reflects not only the diversity of Imants Kalniņš’ music, but also reveals the musical range of Daumants Kalniņš and Kaspars Zemītis.
Along with the songs, instrumental pieces are also performed by the oboa, piano and guitar. Imants Kalniņš has participated in the creation of the concert performance, sharing essay-like reflections on the passage of time. They are braided into the performance to unite the time of creating the songs with the present day.
The concert premiered on May 26, 20016, at Music House DAILE.
