THE OTHER PETER'S MARKET. PERFORMANCE BORROWED LANDSCAPE

29. SEPTEMBER 11.00

Sunday
2024

Liepāja Art Forum

Each day, residents of Liepāja get fresh produce at the historical Peter’s Market, a place that has been shaping the life of the city for generations. Would it be possible to look at it differently? To truly reveal its essence through contemporary dance, to reflect on how we pass through this space, what catches our eye, what we find noteworthy.

Norwegian and Japanese choreographers Heine Avdal and Yukiko Shinozaki, composer Fabrice Moinet will be joined by Latvian performers IevaKrish and other Latvian dancers to create the poetic site-specific contemporary dance performance Borrowed Landscape.

Each Borrowed Landscape is inspired by a specific location. It has previously been shown in a model house, a shopping center, and a theater foyer. The title of this performance is derived from the Japanese term ‘shakkei’, a technique used in Japanese traditional garden design of integrating the surrounding landscape into the composition of a garden. Avdal and Shinozaki embrace this technique by uniting the dancers and the location. They distort the customs and routines of the space to make the audience inspect them more closely.

Through clever and humorous interventions, exaggerated movements, absurd and theatrical actions, the performers challenge our unconscious routine behaviors. It forces us to survey our habits and surroundings and to interrogate our everyday choices. The dancers show the tension and contrast between the body and objects, the body and the mind, the tangible and intangible, organic and artificial, thus asking important questions about our surroundings, our feelings, and facts yet to be uncovered.

The performance is cyclical. Over two hours, attendees can experience one of the six 20-minute performance cycles. There are no intermissions, as the artists move seamlessly from one cycle to another. Attendees can rent headphones for a full experience with thought-provoking questions and ruminations.
