The SEB Scholarship in Painting is a compass for artistic growth pointing rising talents towards professional growth and development. This exhibition sheds light onto the rich stories of its past recipients. Their works reflect not only their individual talent and skill, but also allow an in-depth look into seemingly different experiences, perceptions, and approaches.
The exhibition Stories of Growth features works by each recipient of the SEB Scholarship to date: Neonilla Medvedeva, Atis Jākobsons, Zane Tuča, Elza Sīle, Laimdota Malle, Klāvs Loris, Madara Neikena, Zīle Ziemele, Sandra Strēle, Kristaps Priede, Anna Pommere, Krišjānis Elviks, Madara Kvēpa, Alise Builevica, and Katrīna Biksone.
These artists’ works cover numerous topics, reflecting on both deeply personal and collectively relevant issues of society, religion, and philosophy through explorations of human portraits, natural landscapes, space, metaphysics, and memory.
For example, the paintings of Anna Pommere are a study of memory, viewing the possibilities for representing its different aspects in visual arts. These explorations are connected to contemplations around her own identity.
Atis Jākobsons uses his paintings to study his personal experiences and show a broader view of spiritual matters, with a focus on the meaning of metaphysics and meditation in the complex and stressful modernity.
Sandra Strēle’s large-format installations are based on classic traditions of painting, revealing various narratives in chronological order. The author offers a secluded, alienated, oftentimes lonesome space for existence as an interpretation in a context of architecture and fictitious plots.
Madara Neikena uses minimalistic expression to convey the essence – sounds, smells, sensations – of a given place, while leaving space for the observer’s own contemplation.
Katrīna Biksone’s works stand out with a conceptual method of painting. Her care for detail and contextual approach to painting encourages detailed attention.
The SEB Scholarship in Painting was established in 2008 with the purpose of supporting young talents from the Latvian Academy of Art to polish their skills and promote their creativity. Recipients are provided financial aid and a funded visit to a contemporary art fair and creative workshop in a city of the European Union.
