CLOSING CONCERT OF THE 31ST LIEPĀJA INTERNATIONAL STARS FESTIVAL

11. MARCH 18.00

Saturday
2023

The closing concert of the 31st Liepāja International Stars Festival is expected to be a real treat for symphony jazz lovers – a new piece by a Latvian composer and the voice of a world-famous star.

It is going to be a premiere of the Triple Concerto “Trio Colossus” for tenor saxophone, double bass and percussion by Kārlis Vanags, the artistic director of the Latvian Radio Big Band.

This piece was inspired by the legendary jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins' canonical work, the Saxophone Colossus album, which is one of the most significant jazz albums of all time.

Kārlis Vanags has written a three-part concert, which includes Latino and swing in the beginning and at the end and a jazz ballad in the middle.

Born in London and educated in Nigeria, the world-famous singer with a vast vocal range Ola Onabule is well known to jazz music lovers in Latvia, however, this will be the first time of the owner of the velvety voice performing in Liepāja. He knows how to entwine jazz and soul into a single piece like no one else does, and we will listen to a selection from Onabule's latest album “Point Less”.
