The poetry concert Jaunība (Youth) by singer Nora Kalniņa, pianist Rihards Plešanovs, and poet Ivars Šteinbergs has traveled across Latvia and will also visit Liepāja during Poetry Days this fall. Through music and text, the concert offers a thoughtful and ironic view on the beauty of youth whilst experimenting with the technical boundaries of music.
The concept is based on Ivars Šteinbergs’ award-winning collection of poems titled
Jaunība (Neputns, 2022). The Jaunība trio are peers who, like the protagonists of the poetry book, have hitchhiked to festivals and gone to bohemian gigs back in the day, but now, being masters each at their own craft, will tell their story in this poetry concert.
Latvian chamber music dynamically blends with Šteinbergs’ opulent language, bringing back memories of one’s youth and revealing new forms of artistic expression. Especially for this concert, composer Henrijs Poikāns has created a new work ‘Kopš tevi zinu’ (‘Since I’ve Known You) with lyrics by Ivars Šteinbergs. In addition, the concert will feature compositions by Georgs Pelēcis, Jēkabs Nīmanis, Anna Fišere, Evija Skuķe, Jēkabs Bernāts, as well as an opus by John Cage.
