Emīls Dārziņš lived a short life and created only a small number of opuses, but they are all beloved, and Latvians know many by heart. In honor of the composer’s 150th anniversary, singer Elīna Šimkus proposed a program of all of Dārziņš’ solo compositions, supplemented with two other gems: a piano arrangement of the composer’s masterpiece ‘The Melancholic Waltz’ and an arrangement of the choir song ‘Minjona’ by pianist Vestards Šimkus. Accompanist of the Latvian National Opera Ērika Millere will be playing the piano, and Elīna Šimkus will be joined by soloist of the Latvian National Opera Rihards Millers.
Lyrics for seven of the songs were written by Dārziņš' friend and associate Jānis Poruks; among other lyricists were Rūdolfs Blaumanis, Helgi (Hermanis Albats – lawyer specializing in international law, long-term Ambassador of the Republic of Latvia to the Holy See, Senior Associate Professor of the University of Latvia), Zemgaliešu Biruta, Vilis Plūdons, Teodors Zeiferts, Andrievs Niedra, and the first professional Latvian painter Emīlija Gruzīte. The compositions include a tribute to a Līna Z., a gift to Pāvuls Jurjāns (ironically, it was Jurjāns who initiated a series of events leading to Dārziņš destroying his own symphonic works), Malvīne Vīgnere-Grīnberga, Anna B., and his wife Marija.
The program is filled with tenderness, joy, resignation, nostalgia, drama, and above all – pure beauty that reaches deep into our souls.
