Early music performers Schola Cantorum Riga and the talented jazz saxophonist Dāvis Jurka are offering a special Easter program for Liepāja. On the silent night of Saturday, we find ourselves between the gloom of Good Friday and the light of Easter morning, in a mystery of death and life. The Easter Vigil, or the chanting of the night before Easter, will lead us on a journey towards clarity and understanding of world harmony.
The concert will feature late Medieval religious music from France, Northern Europe, and Rīga, and we will also enjoy brilliant improvisations by Dāvis Jurka, inspired by ancient Gregorian chants. The artistic leader of Schola Cantorum Riga Guntars Prānis has dubbed this technique of Dāvis ‘interludio brillante’. We will remind the audience that the melodic scintillations of Medieval chants have a strong resemblance with the unpredictable twists and turns in jazz, and this program combines both.
The concept of the concert is a path towards light, concluded by a cheerful Hallelujah!
