The legendary ethno-violinist Martin Hayes visited the Great Amber Concert Hall several years ago with the band The Gloaming, and the performance was a smashing success. This time, the outstanding musician will come to Liepāja with his newest collaboration project, The Common Ground Ensemble, offering the audience a glimpse into the soul of Irish traditional music, honoring the musical roots of Ireland, and celebrating its global reach.
‘In the decades to come, we’ll surely talk of having seen [Martin Hayes] in the way others talk of Miles Davis or Jimi Hendrix or John Coltrane.’ (The Irish Times)
Hayes is considered one of the most important talents in the world of Irish traditional music. He is the founder of The Gloaming, The Common Ground Ensemble, and the Martin Hayes Quartet. He has modernized and promoted his genre all over the world.
Hayes’ interpretations of Irish traditional music are purely soulful, as they combine refined musicality and exciting rhythms. ‘This music is, at its essence, a direct and simple expression of feeling. The melodies are sometimes deceptively simple but almost always beautiful, and the rhythm is both understated and entrancing,’ says Hayes.
The concert program An Irish Celebration promises to be an exciting musical journey that enchants the audience and honors the cultural bridge between Ireland and America. This bridge will be manifested as Hayes shares the stage with the versatile musicians of The Common Ground Ensamble – jazz pianist Cormac McCarthy, cellist Kate Ellis, Brooklyn Rider guitarist and arranger Kyle Sanna, as well as Tulla Céilí Band artist Brian Donnellan, who plays the bouzouki, the concertina, and the harmonica.
