The unique Latvian audio-visual project Rothko in Jazz was inspired by the work of artist Mark Rothko, born in Daugavpils. Project is implemented in several stages, and it is based on the synergy of music and artwork. The music motives for this project were created by 10 Latvian composers. They were later harmonized by the quintet led by Māris Briežkalns. The creation of this project was fully supported by Mark Rothko’s successors – Kate Rothko Prizel and Christopher Rothko. The premiere of the project Rothko in Jazz was in April 29, 2015, Kennedy Center, Washington DC, USA. The overall mood of the project is close to minimalism and asceticism, which the artist tried to represent in his paintings.
