“Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe” – so quotes an original piece by European and world-renowned composer Ēriks Ešenvalds from Kurzeme, Latvia. In these restless times, it will be an invitation to gain strength and peace of soul. The special concert program for the Easter period, produced in collaboration with the Uniting History Foundation, will fill the Great Amber Concert Hall with the crystal-clear voices of the Münchner Knabenchor (Munich Boys Choir).
This will be the first visit to Latvia for the German boys and the group of men who have grown from their midst. A diptych created by Ēriks Ešenvalds for this occasion, a prayer in music, will unite the German musicians and the Choir of the Liepaja Music, Art and Design Secondary School under Ilze Balode, creating the magnificent sound of seventy boys’ voices.
A monumental and elaborate repertoire of German and Italian sacred music will soothe the souls of both fans of the classics and traditional boys’ choir music as well as admirers of sacred music. The Good Friday atmosphere will be brought balance and harmony with eight-voice motets by Johann Sebastian Bach and Johann Ludwig Bach, already considered classics of the choir repertoire.
A rich polyphony of voices will be reached in the performance of choir music from heirs of German choir music traditions, Felix Mendelssohn and Franz Schubert, along with melodies from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem and Antonio Vivaldi’s repertoire of sacred pieces, fitting the Easter spirit. Pie Jesu from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Requiem will be performed with the glory of a trumpet and the innocence of children’s voices. In praise of the Virgin Mary, one of the most magnificent Ave Marias, known as Giulio Caccini’s work but actually by Russian composer Vladimir Vavilov, will be performed.
