Gustav Mahler’s Sixth Symphony is often called “the Tragic”. Nobody is quite certain about the origins of this name, but the majority thinks the composer had applied the name himself. Mahler’s works are rich in contrasts, and the Sixth Symphony especially stands
out, and a surprise is prepared for its conclusion. Mahler’s Sixth is not often performed, and its rendering by LNSO will be of interest not only to the diehard Mahler fans. Before Mahler, the witty and elegant Latvian modernist Gundaris Pone from New York and Venice. His Quattro temperamenti d’amore on Petrarch’s beautiful sonnets are almost romantic in their expression.
