ORTHODOX CHRISTMAS. TCHAIKOVSKY’S LITURGY

9. JANUARY 18.00

Saturday
2021

Following tradition, Liepāja Concert Hall Great Amber invites its listeners to a concert of spiritual chants to celebrate the return of light and sun, the Epiphany. This year, when the Orthodox church celebrates the birth of Christ, the Latvian Radio Choir will present the audience with their concert program Orthodox Christmas. Tchaikovsky’s Liturgy.

Upon hearing the name of Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky, most people first think of his symphonies, performative works and chamber music, however, Tchaikovsky’s creative legacy also holds religious choir music, which was retrieved from dusty shelves by the conductor of the Latvian Radio Choir, Sigvards Kļava.

Tchaikovsky composed his monumental Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom in 1878. Nearly one and a half centuries later, in 2019, it was performed and recorded by the Latvian Radio Choir, which thus became one of the very first European collectives to approach the musical liturgy of Tchaikovsky. The record was unanimously praised by audiences and critics alike, and the choir received the International Classical Musical Award 2020 in the category of choir music recordings.

Along with the Orthodox tradition-based view on liturgy, the concert will also feature Byzantian chants in Latvian, arranged by composer Andrejs Selickis – Regent of the Latvian Orthodox Church.
