Flautist Dita Krenberga and pianist Sana Villeruša are not only fine interpreters of music, but also childhood friends. They have decided to combine their talents in a concert program inspired by Romanticism, where rich colors of the sounds of their instruments paint a picture of both the viciousness of life and the light soaring of love.
The concert will be opened by Dita Krenberga’s solo, the dream piece of all flautists – Pēteris Vasks’ Sonata for Flute. This three-part opus is dedicated to birds, the symbols for vitality and freedom. Fleeting birds as a warning to us all. The sonata contains no imitation of birds’ voices, but they are all around, in the rustling of their wings, the urgency of their flight.
As Sana Villeruša joins her colleague on stage, we will hear variations by Franz Schubert in a dialogue between the flute and the piano. After the slow and expansive introduction, which is suggestive with its restrained and somber mood with the dominance of Schubert’s so- called rhythm of death, follows the theme of the song and six virtuoso variations culminating in the seventh, a brilliant E Major as the finale of the piece.
The second part of the concert will be an intimate conversation with our dear Baltic Sea through the three-part opus ‘Jūŗavas’ by Dace Aperāne, especially arranged for the flute and piano. This piece uses minimal expression to create an immensely picturesque seascape, both calm and tempestuous.
The musicians will use the conclusion of the concert to honor composer Carl Reinecke on his 200 th anniversary. In the Romantic period, he dedicated a concert and one of his most radiant and meaningful chamber pieces to the flute. It is his sonata “Undine”, which captures the essence of a mermaid and her emotions in precious arrays of sound with the piano and the flute complementing each other naturally and beautifully.
