Concert series PERSONALLY
Celebrating the 80th birthday of the brilliant Kurzemnieks and world-famous Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks, the Great Amber Concert Hall in Liepāja has prepared a special chamber music program featuring the composer’s early masterpieces. They combine the human and spiritual values characteristic of Vasks’ music, a deep connection with nature, and the beauty of the Latvian identity, moving to any listener regardless of their nationality or language.
The concert will feature one of the composer’s earlier pieces called ‘Mūzika’ (Music), which tells of the independence of the spirit, and his dynamically and emotionally powerful ‘Tokāta’ (Toccata) for two pianos, which, peculiarly, has not yet been recorded in Latvia. This will also be a rare and special opportunity to experience a cycle written in 1975 for a boys' choir, clarinet, and double bass, which Vasks once dedicated to the Emīls Dārziņš School Boys' Choir conducted by Jānis Erenštreits.
The celebration of the composer’s creative life cannot do without chamber music works that are better known to the public. We will hear three pieces for cello and piano, his poetic ‘Ainava ar putniem’ (Landscape with Birds), and Partita for cello and piano.
Pēteris Vasks has promised to be present at the concert and share his comments.
