On September 27 at 17:00, before the concert “Pierre Boulez turns 100. Sinfonietta Rīga”, visitors are invited to attend an educational pre-concert talk on the theme “An enticing guide to Boulez’s personality and music”, led by the concert hall’s Artistic Director, Orests Silabriedis.
Participants: Frank Madlener (IRCAM), Grégoire Lorieux (IRCAM), Rolands Kronlaks (Latvian Composers’ Society).
The performance of Pierre Boulez’s (1925-2016) extraordinarily complex and unexpectedly captivating work “Répons” in Latvia is a major event — perhaps even unique over a longer period of time.
To help the audience attune themselves as fully as possible to the perception of Boulez’s music, we have invited outstanding contemporary classical music specialists for a discussion about Boulez’s oeuvre and his tremendous impact on 20th-century musical processes, his sharply controversial personality, and the possibilities of finding not only complexity but also fascination and beauty in his middle and late works.
Frank Madlener — Director of IRCAM, French pianist, festival director, sought-after music connoisseur, and socially active expert.
Grégoire Lorieux — IRCAM computer music design teacher, French composer, founder of the music and ecology festival Mondes Sonores, and long-time co-director of the renowned contemporary music ensemble Itinéraire.
Rolands Kronlaks — Former IRCAM student, composer with long-standing teaching experience, and Project Manager at the Latvian Composers’ Society.
