The beginning of a new year is always a time to embark on a journey towards new dreams and hopes. Liepāja Concert Hall Great Amber will invite us along to find them in the stunning sounds of music. Together with cellist Valters Pūce, pianist Dainis Tenis, and the Rīga Cathedral Boys Choir, we will introduce this year with pieces by the greatest composers of Latvia and the world which have been dear to listeners for decades due to their soulful sound.
The concert will feature gems of popular and classical music, as well as arrangements of songs by the most outstanding Latvian composers, performed by cello, piano, and the Rīga Cathedral Boys Choir, led by conductor Mārtiņš Klišāns, from previous concert programs, Radīts Latvijā and Bez elektrības! It will bring us back to when the original versions were composed and we will be able to discover them in a completely new light.
The program will feature several premieres along with such works as Dvēselīte by Mārtiņš Brauns, Kvazimodo dziedājums by Zigmars Liepiņš, Ziemeļvējā by Raimonds Macats, Apvij rokas by Imants Kalniņš, the Ballad from Šveiks by Valts Pūce, Kerijas dziesma by Raimonds Pauls, Una Mattina by Ludovico Einaudi, and White Swan and Black Swan by Camille Saint-Saëns and Pyotr Tchaikovsky.
“When selecting songs for the program Radīts Latvijā, which will be a large part of this concert, the most important criteria for us was whether the song can exist without lyrics, with the melody being equally expressive. We wanted to make arrangements for the songs in an academic sound in order to highlight the fact that these songs are already Latvian classics and will thus live forever. The mood of this program is an excellent gift to all those who cherish music created in Latvia, as well as popular and classical music performed by cello, piano, and a boys’ choir,” Valters Pūce explains.
“Playing music as a duo is like an intimate conversation. Since Valters and I are dear, old friends, we can discuss a variety of topics, and this concert program is like our dialogue, which will be enriched by the Rīga Cathedral Boys Choir. There will be joy, melancholy, comedy, and solemnity. Each piece of music takes shape as a separate conversation on the basis of a well-known melody. Valters and I understand each other without words, and we turn this into a new musical narrative,” Dainis Tenis adds on the collaboration of the duo and the concert program.
