ALEKSEJS NAUMOVS. SOLO EXHIBITION ‘VINEYARDS, GARDENS, PARKS, AND OTHER LANDSCAPES’

15. JULY - 25. SEPTEMBER

Friday
2022

From July 15 to September 25, art space Civita Nova of Liepāja Concert Hall Great Amber will host the impressive and extensive exhibition of paintings Vineyards, Gardens, Parks, and Other Landscapes by Latvian painter and art professor Aleksejs Naumovs, which offers a look at the world through the artist’s eyes. Attendees of the opening event on July 15 at 5 p.m. can meet the author himself.

The large-format paintings capture the landscapes of New York, Paris, Venice, Burano, Rīga, Hong Kong, Canet-en-Roussillon, Rundāle, Liepāja, and other places all over the world, revealing the artist’s emotions and impressions from his travels.

The artist is true to the genre of landscape, he extensively paints en plein air, and not only in the warm countries of Southern Europe, where the dark green of cypress trees plays against the bright skies, but also in the colorful summers and harsh winters of Latvia. At the core of his works are confident and deliberate strokes, vital colors and a composition that captures the very essence of each place.

The exhibition is dominated by the calmingly warm South of France, Italian landscapes, as well as the cheerful gardens of Rundāle and the most picturesque suburbs of Rīga. Also in his latest works, created in the summer and fall of 2021 at Les Amis de l’Espparrou, an art residence located at the Esparrou castle and supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of France, Aleksejs Naumovs offers the viewer his own personal view of the place, moment and light rather than a general, typical picture of a landscape. On the Burano island of Venice, where the painter has worked a lot, he even keeps a box of paints and clean canvases to embody a brightly-colored house and a reflection of the pure sky at the next opportunity.

Even though Aleksejs Naumovs’ reflections of landscapes of the world have traveled through several Latvian towns in recent years, news works are constantly added to the collection. The exhibition in Liepāja will reveal new works which have never been presented to the public before.

Aleksejs Naumovs (b. 1955) has graduated from the Department of Monumental Painting at the Latvian Academy of Art under Prof. Indulis Zariņš and completed his postgraduate studies in the workshop of Prof. Eduards Kalniņš. While studying painting in Paris, he received a stipend from the French government. Professor at the Latvian Academy of Art, teacher at the Latvian Academy of Art (2007–2017). The painter has initiated, led, participated in exchange programs and curated exhibitions in various collaboration projects in Italy, France, Japan, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Spain, Greece, Russia, the USA, and other countries. He has organized over 60 solo exhibitions. Aleksejs Naumovs’ contribution to art has also been acknowledged by the Latvian government, and the artist has received the highest award of the state, the Commander’s Cross of Recognition. In 2016, the artist was awarded with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, the French award for arts and literature.
