The Liepāja Concert Hall Great Amber is excited to welcome the young and greatly successful, talented and amazing Finnish conductor, artistic director and chief conductor of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra (LNSO) Tarmo Peltokoski. For his first performance in Liepāja, he and the LNSO have chosen Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho’s work “Laterna magica”, which was inspired by the autobiography of the brilliant cinema director Ingmar Bergman and the 17th century predecessor of the image projector with the same name. The opus was premiered at the Lucerne Festival by the Berliner Philharmoniker with Sir Simon Rattle as conductor.
The central event of the program will be Richard Strauss’s “Eine Alpensinfonie”– his most opulent symphonic work in terms of the number of performers, with over a hundred musicians joining on stage (which might be the main reason why it is rather rarely performed). Strauss had initially abandoned this piece and only returned to it upon the death of his friend Gustav Mahler in 1911. The twenty-two episodes of the symphony tell an adventurous and awe-inspiring story of a climb up the Alps, from dawn to dusk, a picturesque walk in the forest and along a brook, an interpretation of the beauty of meadow flowers, a monumental glacier, a heavy storm, and, finally, the peaceful calm of nightfall.
