We will conclude the festival with an original piece that will provoke deep reflection on the afterlife. This Requiem for the unfathomable afterlife was created for the Festival at PAiR in Pāvilosta, a result of a week-long residency collaboration by a team of extraordinary talents – pianists Robert Fleitz and Rihards Plešanovs and poet Madara Gruntmane.
‘We are constantly surrounded by news of death: human deaths in war and plague, the slow death of nature, and even often the death of ‘culture’. We mourn these deaths by looking backwards, to the impression they made as they existed on earth. But what happens after? I myself have no strict conviction, the only thing I know is that there is no way to know. Yet, we are offered many possibilities: from Judeo-Christian theology, the spirituality of the Far East, pagan mysticism, scientific rationalism, even post-human immortality,’ Robert Fleitz explains his inspirations for this composition.
The two pianos symbolize angels, guardians, monuments to these unknown afterlives, and the music allows us access to spaces beyond everyday cognition. Each piece reflects a different facet of what happens when something or someone dies. At the center of these two massive instruments is an individual, our human guide who provides meaning and helps us spot our own spiritual awareness.
